On a small cliff, in the heart of a beautiful forest, is a whole world in miniature. Heathers, mosses, liverworts and lichens have made a rich tapestry on this vertical world, with deep cushions of turquoise and emerald greens, and hanging fringes of ochres and purples, all thriving on this undisturbed and unpolluted secret place.
Scotland is home to over 1,500 variety of lichens, some of which are rare and important on a European and even global scale. Our moist, cool climate also provides the ideal conditions for mosses and liverworts, which provide homes for tiny creatures, act as a sponge to slow water runoff, and provide the building material for our blanket bogs.
